“I should disapprove of nobody more heartily than one who merely copied what he sees… and not going a step beyond or making any effort to do so.” - Hiroshi Yoshida

The end goal of making woodblock prints, for myself, has never been to merely make copies of older prints. Striving to live up to the words of Mr. Yoshida, we have taken what we have learned from the December print in the shin-hanga style of printmaking, and attempted to make an ‘original’ woodblock print using the same techniques.

We say original in quotation because this particular woodblock print is based off of Studio Ghibli’s “Kiki’s Delivery Service.” However, we opted to stray away from depicting any of the key moments from the film. We went with a moment of beauty that would otherwise go noticed. These types of slice-of-life moments have always held a special spot in my heart. They showcase a quite beauty that often goes unnoticed in the hustle of our day to day lives.

This quaint postcard sized print is the end result of many hours of slowly chipping away at hard cherry wood, and vigorous printing on handmade Japanese Mulberry paper (Echizen Kozo). In total this print is composed of 12 different block faces (1 key block and 11 color blocks), and 13 different printing impressions.
