Descending Dragons

Our February Print!

Designed by: Utagawa Kuniyoshi

Carved and Printed by: Brandon Johnson

About the Print:

Happy New Years… or perhaps we are one month late to that, or exactly on time depending on who you ask! 2024 is the year of the dragon, and to usher us into the new year we thought it would be a fun challenge to bring this old design by Utagawa Kuniyoshi back to life.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi is considered to be one of the last great masters of the Japanese Ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. Known more for his paintings of beautiful women, cats, and kabuki actors; this particular design of two dragons facing off with each other above stormy seas does not circulate amongst his retinue of famous designs. We here thought that was a shame, as at least as far as we are concerned, this particular design is both a unique and fun take on traditional depictions of dragons at the time.

This quaint postcard sized print is the end result of man hours of slowly chipping away at hard cherry wood, and vigorous printing on handmade Japanese mulberry paper (Echizen Kozo). In total this print is composed of 9 different block faces (1 key block and 8 color blocks), and 11 different printing impressions.

We hope that you will enjoy this print for many years to come, and we hope that you will keep an eye out for the next prints to come in the following months!

Thank you again!
