The August 2024 Print Descends from the Clouds!

Time is flying past, and this year is now over half gone! With that in mind, we started the year off with a print of two dragons over the sea by Kuniyoshi, we named that print “Descending Dragons,” so it would only stand to reason to revisit this concept once again now that we are halfway through the year of the dragon. It not only gives me a good sense of how my skills have progressed, but also makes a nice pair with the first design. Thankfully looking at this new Print, I think we are still headed in a good direction!

Kuniyoshi is considered to be one of the last great masters of the Japanese Ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. Known more for his paintings of beautiful women, cats and kabuki actors. This particular design is much more inline with traditional Ukiyo-e dragons of the period. Emerging from the dark sky over a tumultuous sea, one is left to wonder if the dragon is here to cause or to quell the roaring waves.

This quaint postcard sized print is the end result of many hours of slowly chipping away at hard cherrywood, and vigorous printing on handmade Japanese Mulberry paper (Echizen Kozo). In total this print is composed of seven different block faces (1 key block and 6 color blocks), and 11 different printing impressions.
