"Spring Blooms"
The April 2024 Print takes flight!
In the cannon of Japanese art there are no two plants which seem to be so synonymous with the early days of spring than that of the iconic cherry blossom and the slightly lesser known plum blossom. The later of these two is the primary subject of our April print. Of course with that being said, there was no shortage of inspiration to pull from when it comes to prints of this nature, but for April we decided to tackle this knockout of a design by Imao Keinen!
Taken from Keinen’s most notable work, “Keinen Kacho Gafu,” this design is wonderfully delicate. It is subtle in its overall presentation, putting all of its focus on the flycatcher and newly blooming plum blossoms. These designs might cause on to draw comparisons with John Audubon’s book on a similar subject.
Although simple in appearance, this print has proven to be a challenge every step of the way, haha. However, I feel as though I am the better printmaker/carver because of it!
